Few things had more value in the western plains warrior society than a warriors best horse.  The war horse was taken special care of because in battle the warriors very life depended on the animal he was riding.  To touch a live enemy in battle was a sign of courage.  After insulting his enemy in such a manner the warrior proudly displays the hand print on his horses jaw.
